The main subjects involved in Naval Architecture are as follows:

• Hydrostatics: This subject is related to the conditions to which vessels are subjected i.e., their ability to remain afloat on water even when they are at rest. This subject includes hydrostatic properties such as trim and stability.

• Hydrodynamics: Hydrodynamics is the subject related to the flow of water around and over the ship’s bodies. The water which flows around the hull, stern and bows causes resistance for the motion of the ship. Calculation of power is done based on the resistance occurred due to water flow around the hull.

• Flotation and stability: The stability of the ship to float on water depends upon the distance between longitudinal Metacenter and the center of gravity.
